Stone Mason for Cedar Park Stone Walls & Veneer
Limestone and natural stone walls, stone veneer on houses and columns, mailbox and entry columns, and stonework repair, in a town that was built on stone.
Price Stonework
Cedar Park was a limestone town before it was a suburb. Local quarries shipped building stone from the 1890s until about 1970 (Texas State Historical Association), and the rock under the town has its own name, the Cedar Park Member, up to about 125 feet thick near here (USGS Geolex). New stonework should sit comfortably next to the old.
Stonemasons' Styles: Pick the Look
Chopped limestone
Rough split faces in random courses. The classic Central Texas look on houses and walls.
Sawn or cut limestone
Smooth, square faces in even courses. Clean and modern, more expensive to cut.
Ashlar pattern
Rectangular stones in mixed sizes laid in a repeating pattern.
Rubble and fieldstone
Irregular stones with wider joints. Suits garden walls and rustic columns.
Stacked stone
Thin ledgestone strips with tight or no visible joints. Popular on fireplaces and accent walls.
Dry-stack
Stone laid without mortar. Low garden walls and terraces only.
Stone Veneer: Natural Thin, Full-Bed or Manufactured
| Type | What it is | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Full-bed natural stone | Stone about 3 to 5 inches deep, needs a ledge or footing to sit on | New walls and additions; matches older limestone houses |
| Thin natural veneer | Real stone sawn to about an inch thick, adhered to lath | Existing walls, fireplaces and columns with no footing |
| Manufactured stone | Cast concrete shaped and colored like stone | Lightest and lowest cost; color can fade with sun |
Adhered veneer of either kind lives or dies by what's behind it, and that's the part to ask stone veneer installers about: water-resistive barrier, lath, a scratch coat, and a weep screed at the bottom so water can drain out. Skip those and moisture gets trapped against the framing.

Stone Wall, Column and Mailbox Work
Freestanding garden walls, seat walls, entry columns and mailbox pillars all start the same way: a poured footing below the topsoil, then a core and stone, or solid stone for low walls. Because we pour the footing ourselves, there's no gap between the concrete crew and the stonemason. Stone-faced retaining walls follow the wall's engineering first and the stone second.
Stonework Repair
Loose cap stones, cracked joints and stones popped off a veneer wall are the usual calls. We reset or replace with matched stone and repoint with a lime-rich mortar that's softer than the limestone, so the joints take the wear. Hard cement mortar on soft limestone is a common cause of the damage in the first place.

Local Stonemason Questions
Is natural limestone or manufactured stone better?
Natural limestone lasts practically forever and matches older Cedar Park stonework. Manufactured veneer is lighter and costs less to install, but it depends entirely on the moisture barrier, lath and weep screed behind it. We'll quote both if you're undecided.
What does stone veneer cost to install?
Stone type, wall height, corners, cutting around windows and scaffolding drive it more than square footage alone. Thin natural stone sits between manufactured and full-bed stone. Use the calculator above for quantities and we'll price the labor after seeing the wall.
Can you repair old stonework?
Yes: resetting loose stones, replacing broken ones with matched stone, and repointing with a mortar softer than the stone. Stonework repair on a limestone house is mostly about the mortar choice.
What does a limestone retaining wall cost?
Height and construction type set it. A low dry-stacked wall is the simplest; a tall wall usually needs a concrete or block core faced in limestone, and over the code height it needs engineering. See retaining walls.
Brick work is on brick and masonry repair; stone fireplaces are on chimney and fireplace repair.
