Walls rarely fail because the block was weak. They fail because water built up behind them. Most of a good retaining wall is what you can't see: the footing, the gravel backfill and the drain.

Does my wall need an engineer?

A general guide, not a code ruling.

Building Retaining Walls on Rocky Hillside Lots

  • Footing below the topsoil, keyed into rock where we can reach it
  • Clean gravel backfill at least 12 inches behind the wall
  • A perforated drain or weep holes with a place for the water to go
  • Geogrid for taller segmental walls, per the block maker's chart

On many Cedar Park lots, we hit rock before the footing reaches full depth. That's usually a good thing structurally, but it changes the excavation price, and we'll show you that number before we commit.

Retaining Wall Questions

Can the wall be faced in native limestone?

Yes. A poured or block core can be veneered in cut limestone to match the house, or a short garden wall can be built as solid mortared stone. Our masonry page covers both.
