Is Your Slab a Candidate for an Overlay?

Concrete resurfacing companies all say the same thing in different words: an overlay is only as good as what's under it. Check what you see.

Stamped Concrete Overlay vs. Other Resurfacing Types

OverlayThicknessBest for
Skim coat / microtoppingPaper-thin to about 1/8 inSmoothing worn or patched areas, a clean uniform color
Spray texture (knockdown)About 1/8 inCooler, grippy pool decks and patios
Stampable overlayAbout 1/4 to 3/4 inSlate, stone or brick patterns on an existing slab
Self-leveling toppingVariesInterior or garage slabs that need to be flat again

All of them are polymer-modified cement products. None of them is a paint or a coating, and none of them fixes a slab that's still moving.

How Concrete Overlay Contractors Prep the Surface

  1. Sound itA hammer tap across the slab finds hollow, delaminated spots that have to come out.
  2. Open it upGrinding or shot-blasting removes sealer and laitance so the overlay can bond.
  3. Fix and honor jointsStable cracks get routed and filled; control joints are kept, not buried.
  4. Place and sealOverlay, pattern or texture, color, then sealer once cured.

Concrete Resurfacing Driveway Jobs vs. Patios and Pool Decks

Driveways get a vehicle-rated mix and a breathable sealer, and concrete driveway resurfacing contractors should tell you how long to wait before parking on it, which is longer than for foot traffic; pool decks and patios usually get a lighter, textured finish that stays cooler underfoot. If you'd rather start fresh with a full stamped slab, see stamped and decorative concrete. Structural problems belong on the concrete repair page first.

Questions for Concrete Resurfacing Companies

How long does a concrete overlay last?

On a sound, well-prepared slab, many years. The two things that shorten it are poor surface prep and movement in the slab underneath. That's why we sound the slab and grind or shot-blast it before anything goes on.

Will cracks come back through the overlay?

Moving cracks will. We route and fill stable cracks and carry existing control joints up through the overlay so the new surface has somewhere to crack on purpose.

Is a stamped concrete overlay cheaper than new stamped concrete?

Often, because there's no tear-out or haul-off and less material. It isn't always cheaper on a small or badly damaged slab, where replacing makes more sense. We'll price both when it's close.

Can you resurface a driveway?

Yes, if it's structurally sound. Driveways take tire scrub and hot-tire pickup, so we use a polymer-modified overlay rated for vehicle traffic and a sealer that tolerates it.
