Masonry Repair: What Your Brick Crack Is Telling You

Cedar Park houses mostly sit on slabs over limestone with clay in the seams, and that clay swells and shrinks with the seasons. Brick veneer is stiff, so when the slab under it moves even a little, the brick shows it first. The pattern of the crack says a lot about why, and it decides whether brick wall repair is a mortar job or a foundation question.

Brick crack checker

Pick a pattern. A coin is about 1/16 in thick; two stacked is about 1/8 in.

The honest part: if the foundation is still moving, brick repair is cosmetic and will crack again. We'll tell you when to call a foundation repair company or an engineer first, and come back for the brick once the movement is handled.

Brick Repair Services

We rake out failed joints to a consistent depth, then repack them in layers with a mortar matched to the brick, softer than the brick, so the joint wears instead of the brick face. Type N mortar suits most veneer; harder Type S belongs below grade and in retaining work, not on old soft brick.

Brick Mason for New Brickwork

Garden and seat walls, brick columns and mailboxes, porch steps, planters and veneer on additions. Because we pour our own footings, the concrete and the brick get built as one job instead of handed between two crews. New brick on an existing house means matching color, size and the mortar joint profile, so we lay a sample panel before ordering the full run.

Natural stone and limestone veneer are on the stone masonry page; concrete block walls are on block walls; chimneys and fireplaces have their own page.

Masonry Contractors Near Me: Brick Questions

Can you match the brick on my house?

Often close, rarely perfect. Brick runs change color batch to batch, so we bring samples to the wall and check them in daylight before ordering. Sometimes the cleanest answer is salvaged brick from a hidden spot on the visible face, with new brick where it won't show.

What does repointing cost?

It's priced mostly by labor per square foot of wall, and the depth of the bad mortar, the joint profile, scaffolding and how hard the old mortar is to rake out all change it. We look at a few joints before quoting, because that's what sets the hours.

What causes spalling brick?

Water getting into the brick and freezing, or salts migrating out of it, often made worse by hard cement mortar or a sealer that traps moisture. We replace spalled units and fix the water source; otherwise new brick spalls too.

Why is my brick wall bowing or bulging?

Usually failed wall ties on veneer, or water and soil pressure on a solid wall. A bulge is structural. It gets an engineer's look before it gets a bid, and repair can mean taking the section down and relaying it with new ties.

Does Cedar Park require brick on new homes?

Not anymore at the city level. Since 2019, Texas Government Code §3000.002 has barred most cities from requiring or banning building materials that national codes allow. Many HOAs still set masonry percentages in their deed restrictions, so check yours before an addition.
