Driveway replacement, widening and new approaches, with the subgrade fixed and the city paperwork filed before the truck shows up.

What a Driveway Installer Should Do Before the Pour
Most driveways we replace failed one of three ways: the apron cracked where the curb and slab move differently, a panel tilted over a soft fill pocket, or tree roots lifted a section. Each cause needs its own fix. Driveway replacement contractors who pour new concrete over the same subgrade will see the same cracks again. If only one or two panels failed, concrete driveway repair at the joints may be all you need.
- Saw-cut and break out. We cut at a clean joint so the part we keep has a straight edge, then haul the old slab off.
- Fix the cause. Dig out the soft spot, cut and root-barrier the roots, or rebuild the base at the apron.
- Forms and steel. Rebar set on chairs, so the steel sits mid-depth instead of resting on the ground.
- Pour, finish, joint. Broom finish across the slope for grip, and joints cut to a quarter of the depth within a day.
How much concrete is your driveway?
Measure the area in feet. Driveways and garage aprons are usually 5 to 6 inches thick; patios and walks are usually 4.
Driveway Approach Permits in Cedar Park
The apron, the strip from the curb up to your lot line, usually sits in the public right-of-way. The city treats work there differently from work on your own lot:
Driveway approach permit
Applications go through MGO Connect. The city asks contractors to confirm with Building Permits & Inspections (512-401-5100) whether a given job needs one (City of Cedar Park FAQ). The city says residential permits are generally issued in 5 to 7 business days.
Temporary right-of-way use
If the work blocks the sidewalk or puts barricades in the street, a separate temporary use permit is required. It is filed with the driveway approach application, no later than the ninth day before the work (Cedar Park Code, Art. 16.03). The application asks for proof of insurance, a cost estimate and a one-year maintenance bond.
Lots on a state road
If your driveway opens onto a TxDOT-maintained road, the city requires an approved TxDOT permit before any concrete work in that right-of-way (Cedar Park Code §14.05.002).
That nine-day lead time is the most common reason a driveway job can't start "next Monday." We'd rather say so up front than tear out your apron and leave it open.
Choosing Driveway Pavement: Broom, Aggregate or Stamped Border
| Option | Good for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Broom finish | Grip on slopes, lowest cost | Shows tire marks over time |
| Exposed aggregate | Hides stains, adds texture | Costs more; stones pop if under-cured |
| Stamped border | Curb appeal without stamping the whole drive | Needs resealing, see stamped concrete |
| Thickened edge | Edges that trucks drive over | More concrete and more digging |
When to Seal a Driveway, and When Not To
A plain broom-finish driveway doesn't need a film sealer, which can get slick and peel. A penetrating silane or siloxane sealer, applied after the slab has cured about a month, cuts down on water and oil staining and is worth repeating every few years. Stamped and colored driveways are different: the sealer is part of the finish, and skipping it lets the color fade.

Comparing Driveway Companies? Five Questions to Ask
- How thick at the apron, and is the edge thickened?
- Rebar on chairs, wire mesh, or fiber only?
- Who files the approach and right-of-way permits?
- What happens if you hit rock, and how is it priced?
- When and how deep are the joints cut?
If a bid is much lower than the rest, one of those answers is usually the reason. Cracked driveway but not ready to replace it? See concrete repair or driveway resurfacing.
Concrete Driveway Questions
How thick should a driveway be?
We pour 5 inches for cars and light trucks, and 6 inches with thickened edges where heavy trucks or a trailer park. The apron at the street takes the most load, so it never gets the thinnest section.
Can I widen my driveway in Cedar Park?
Usually, but widening the part that meets the street changes the driveway approach, and that takes city review. HOAs also often limit width. We check both before quoting the widening.
How long before I can drive on it?
Walk on it the next day, park cars on it after roughly seven days, and give heavy trucks about four weeks. The mix and the weather shift those numbers, and the hand-off sheet gives yours.
What does driveway pavement cost here?
It depends on tear-out, thickness, finish and whether the approach is involved, which is why we price after a site visit. A plain broom-finish replacement is the baseline; exposed aggregate, stamped borders and rock excavation each add a line you'll see itemized.
Do you install permeable pavement driveways?
Pervious concrete exists, but it needs a deep open-graded stone base and regular vacuuming to stay open, and on thin soil over limestone the water has little place to go. For most Cedar Park lots, a conventional slab with good drainage is the better driveway. We'll tell you if your lot is an exception.
