Stamped concrete is regular concrete that gets colored and then imprinted while it's still plastic. It looks like stone, brick or pavers for less than the real thing. The catch is that it's a finish system: the sealer is part of the cost of owning it.

Stamped Concrete Near Me: Patterns to Compare

  • Ashlar slate

Rectangular cut stone in mixed sizes. Forgiving of small layout errors; the most popular patio pattern.

  • Chiseled slate

Squarer stones with a hand-cut edge look. Good next to a limestone house.

  • Travertine

Pitted, soft texture that reads like Mediterranean stone. Comfortable barefoot around pools.

  • Herringbone brick

Brick set at 45 degrees. Classic for driveway borders and entry walks.

  • Wood plank

Weathered boards in concrete. Works beside decks or under covered patios.

  • Random flagstone

Loose Hill Country flagstone shapes. Suits curved patios and garden paths.

Texture-only stamps (no grout lines) and rolling texture rollers give a subtle stone surface on walks and porches without a full pattern. On a stamped concrete walkway that's often the better choice, because deep grout lines catch heels and stroller wheels.

Stamp Cement Pour Day, Hour by Hour

  1. Early morning: place and screed. In warm months we start at first light so there's time to stamp before the slab stiffens.
  2. Color hardener and release. Broadcast color goes on and is floated in, then a contrasting release powder or liquid so the mats don't stick.
  3. Stamping. Mats go down in sequence while the concrete is still soft enough to take the imprint. This is why stamped jobs need a bigger crew.
  4. Next days: wash and cut joints. Excess release is washed off, and control joints are cut along grout lines where they hide.
  5. After the cure: seal. The first sealer coat brings the color out.

Stamp Driveway Concrete Fully, or Just the Border?

A fully stamped concrete driveway is a lot of sealed surface to maintain under tires, and hot tires can lift some sealers. A broom-finished driveway with a stamped border or apron band gets most of the look with far less upkeep. Driveway thickness and permit details are on the driveway page.

Custom Concrete Color: Integral, Hardener, Stain

Integral color is mixed in the truck and runs all the way through. Color hardener is broadcast on top and gives stronger, denser surface color. Acid or water-based stains are applied later for mottled, variegated tones, and they're also how faded stamped concrete gets restained. Many patios combine a light integral base with a darker release for depth.

Stamped Concrete Sealing & Reseal Schedule

When is my next reseal?

Pick a year and an exposure.

If you don't want to reseal every few years, a plain broom or salt finish (on the patio page) will be the happier choice. We'll say that on the site visit too. Already have plain concrete you'd like patterned? A stampable overlay can go over a sound slab.

Stamped Concrete Questions

How often does stamped concrete need resealing?

Most Cedar Park owners reseal every two to three years, and sooner on a pool deck. The sealer keeps the color rich and the surface protected, and it wears faster in strong UV.

Does a stamped patio get hot?

Darker colors do. A sand or light buff base with a lighter release color stays noticeably cooler than charcoal or deep brown.

What does stamped concrete cost compared to plain concrete?

More, because of color, release agent, the extra finishers needed to stamp before the slab sets, and sealer. A 400 square foot patio with one pattern and one color is the simple end; borders, multiple colors and curves add labor. We price both plain and stamped on the same estimate if you're undecided.

Is stamped concrete slippery?

Sealed stamped concrete can get slick when wet. We add a fine grit to the sealer on pool decks and walkways, and choose patterns with more texture there.

Can old stamped concrete be restained?

Usually, if the surface is sound. We strip or clean off the old sealer, recolor with a stain or tinted sealer, then reseal. Peeling or white, cloudy sealer has to come off first.
